Route Highlights of Lake District Walks

Ambleside

This will be your base for the week, a small town in the Lake District, standing at the head of Windermere and ideally located amongst some of England’s finest scenery. With a range of shops and great restaurants, it is the perfect base for exploring the Lake District.

New Friendships, New Challenges

Group walks are all about the people you meet, new acquaintances and new experiences.Over the five days together we’ll learn a lot about each other and many new friendships will be forged. If you haven’t been to the area before then the experience of the Lake District is something that sometimes in order to get the best views, you will need to challenge yourself physically.None of our walks have any technical difficulties, however they do involve a fair amount of walking, of which quite a bit is uphill!

Rydal Caves

Man made caves of a former slate quarry, with stepping stones to take you to the interior of the caves

Classic Walks

We’ll try and give you “a taste” of what the stunning Lake District has to offer with some classic daily walks with stunning views.

Itinerary for Guided Walks Lake District: 5 Days

Grading: Demanding if walked over 5 days.

Sunday: Day 0 - Arrival and Meet Up

You are free to arrive at your accommodation in Ambleside from 3pm, feel free to have a wander around this lovely little town and get yourself acquainted with the area. Your guides will meet you in the reception area at 6pm for a general “get to know each other” and to go through the weeks itinerary.

Monday: Day 1 - Ambleside Loop via Rydal Cave & Grasmere

Distance: 10 miles / 16kms
Ascent: 275 mtrs

Our first walk is a “stretch your legs” type of walk, a reasonable distance but on moderate terrain, we’ll visit Rydal Cave and do a low level walk around both Rydal & Grasmere before returning to Ambleside mid afternoon along “the corpse road”

There will be an optional further walk later however you are free to relax around the town at your own leisure.

Tuesday: Day 2 - Newlands Horseshoe, via Catbells & Robinson, inc trip on Keswick Launch

Today, we head up to Keswick and take the launch (ferry) over Derwent Water to start our walk on the far side of the water. This classic loop walk take us up over Catbells and Maiden Moor, with stunning views back over Keswick, with Skiddaw and Walla Crag in the distance, we then come back in a loop, over the top of Robinson before dropping down into the Newlands Valley to the ferry for a return trip to Keswick.

Wednesday: Day 3 - Buttermere Loop via High Crags & High Stile

Distance: 8 miles / 13kms
Ascent: 775 mtrs

This mornings drive takes us down through the Borrowdale Fells, past Honister Slate Mine to the tiny village of Buttermere. The walk starts from the village and takes us down the side of the lake before turning and climbing up onto the crags that overlook the valley, topping out on Haystacks (slight detour), High Crag and High Stile. You’ll also have some great views of the adjoining valley of Ennerdale to the west of you.

Again, if time allows we’ll spend a bit of time visiting Honister Slate Mine on the return journey.

Thursday: Day 4 - Fairfield Horseshoe

Distance: 11 miles / 18kms
Ascent: 800 mtrs

No driving today, we’ll walk out of the accommodation after breakfast and tackle the “Fairfield Horseshoe”, up onto the ridgeline of Low & High Pike to the head of the Rydal Beck, with stunning views of Windermere and the western lakes. We return off Fairfield via Heron Pike and down into the village of Rydal and back to Ambleside.

Friday: Day 5 - Troutbeck via Wansfell Pike

Distance: 6.5 miles / 11kms

Maps and Information

Below you will find maps of routes you will take on this walk of the Lakes:

Ambleside Loop, Newlands Horseshoe, Buttermere Loop and Fairfield Horseshoe.

We have tried to put together a variety of walks to give you a look at the Central Lake District, due to it’s geography there will likely be the need to navigate up some steep rocky climbs and over barren and boggy landscapes. None of the walks require any technical expertise, however you do need to be physically prepared for some climbing and uneven ground.

Terrain

The terrain of all our routes can be very varied, below is a general guide to what you can expect, and not expect, on this walk:

  • Minor Roads (Tarmac / Asphalt)
  • Paved Footpaths
  • Way-marked public footpaths / bridleways
  • Grassy unpaved open fields
  • Areas of mud / standing water
  • Sandy Beaches
  • Tidal Water
  • Rocky uneven ascents / decents
  • Requirement for “Scrambling”
  • Streams / Water Crossing (wider than 1m)
  • Risk of Slipping
