Day Walk – Holy Island of Lindisfarne

This is one of the “must do” walks in Northumberland.

The Island is opened to the mainlanders by the receding tides twice a day, allowing access for pedestrians and vehicles onto and off the island. On this walk we follow the original route of the Pilgrims who first came onto the island over the sands from the mainland.

History

The Pilgrims Way follows the route that the monks and pilgrims would have used to access the island prior to the building of the main causeway

Terrain

The terrain is flat and you will be walking over sands that have been exposed by the receding tide.  The sand can be very soft and we do recommend removing footwear prior to walking the route.

Climate

Although in theory this route can be walked throughout the year, the weather in the North of England can be very inclement in the winter months, it can also be very inclement in the summer months as well!!

The weather in this area can change very rapidly.  We always advise walkers to take heed of weather forecasts and to be fully prepared for whatever the English climate can throw at you.
