Route Highlights of walking in Northumberland

Hadrians Wall

This 74 mile defensive wall spanned the width of England across the Northern Frontier of the Roman Army. Built in the early 2nd Century, we will walk a preserved section of it from Housesteads.  In the afternoon we visit the remains of the Roman settlement of Vindolanda

The Holy Island of Lindisfarne & Bamburgh Castle

Walk in the footsteps of Saints from the mainland, over the receding tidal waters to the sanctuary of Lindisfarne, visit the 7th Century Priory (entry fees included) and the majestic Lindisfarne Castle (entry fees not included).

In the afternoon we head for Bamburgh Castle and a short walk along the beach and around the castle to take in its spectacular setting.

Option to visit the Castle if time allows (entry fees not included)

The Rugged Northumberland Moors

Head to the hills for some stunning landscapes around Simonside, finish the day with a visit to Cragside House, the first home in the world to be powered by Hydro-electricity (entry included)

Northumberland Coastline (AONB) Craster, Dunstanburgh Castle and Howick Hall

Today is a short drive to Howick Hall, from where we head down to the coast and follow the stunning coastline north to the pretty fishing village of Craster, famous for it’s kippers (smoked herrings).  From there we walk to the imposing ruins of Dunstanburgh Castle (Entry not included, English Heritage).

From Dunstanburgh, we head inland and follow narrow lanes through the fields back to Howick Hall.

There is then time for a visit to Alnwick where you will have time to explore the town and all it has to offer including Alnwick Castle, Alnwick Gardens & Treehouse and Barter Books

Alnwick Pastures

Alnwick Pastures or Hauxley Nature Reserve – A local morning walk prior to departing after lunch

Itinerary: 5 Days Walking in Northumberland

Grading: Comfortable / Demanding when walked over 5 days.

Sunday: Day 0 - Arrival and Meet Up

Join trip in Alnwick or AmbleYour tour guide will meet you in reception area at 6pm for an introduction and briefing on the week ahead, this will be followed by the option for a group meal and drink in the hotel (not included). Please note days may be moved around depending upon tides and other factors.

Walk 1 - Holy Island & Bamburgh Beach

Grade: Moderate
Distance: 8 miles / 13kms
Ascent: 60 mtrs

The day starts with a visit to The Holy Island of Lindisfarne, however we don’t do this like any normal visitor!

From the 1950’s there has been a tarmacked “causeway” that allows vehicle access onto the island when the tides are out, however prior to this, for the 1300 years previous, the only access route was over the sands, following the route of the pilgrims who came over to see St Cuthbert.

The Pilgrims Way, this is the route we will take! We are going to walk from the mainland, following the receding tide, along the route of the Pilgrims Way onto the Island itself. (Wise to remove shoes/socks and roll up your trousers at this point) We will supply you with towels to dry off your feet on the other side. Once on the mainland we head to the village and visit the Priory, sections of which date back to 635AD. We then head to the imposing Lindisfarne Castle, which is impressive from the outside but pretty basic on the inside since it was restored in the early 1900’s, we then have a walk around the full island. Entry to Lindisifarne Priory included. On the way back we take a diversion to Bamburgh for a view of the imposing castle and a walk along the beach.

Walk 2 - Hadrians Wall & Vindolanda Settlement

Grade: Moderate
Distance: 10 miles / 16kms
Ascent: 300 mtrs

We have an hours drive to Hadrians Wall, once there we head off on a circular walk, up on to the Wall at Once Brewed, taking in Steel Rigg and Sycamore Gap (Robin Hood Tree), before heading down to the Roman settlement of Vindolanda for lunch and an afternoon taking to the archaeologists and exploring the ever changing site. Entry to Vindolanda included.

Walk 3 - Dunstanburgh & Warkworth Castle

Grade: Moderate
Distance: 9 miles / 14.5kms
Ascent: 150 mtrs

This circular walk along the coastline and back through the fields takes in the fishing village of Craster, famous for it’s kippers (smoked herrings) as well as the ruined castle of Dunstanburgh, home to nesting seabirds including Fulmers, Kittiwakes and Razor Bills (spring season).

Entry to Dunstanburgh Castle included. We head back by Warkworth for a short walk along the river, taking in the moated castle.

Walk 4 - Simonside Hills and Cragside House

Grade: Demanding
Distance: 6 miles / 10kms
Ascent: 300 mtrs

Make sure you have your porridge this morning as we have a good walk up into the hills above Rothbury, once at the top you are able to see unspoilt countryside for miles around you.

The afternoon is spend in the former home of Lord Armstrong, Cragside House, famous for being the first house in the world to be powered by hydro-electricity. Entry to Cragside included.

Walk 5 – Morning Walk (Alnwick Pastures or Hauxley Nature Reserve)

Grade: Comfortable
Distance: 5 miles / 8kms
Ascent: 120 mtrs

Our final walk is a short morning walk (approx. 5 miles) direct from the accommodation, either through Alnwick and taking in the views of the castle from the Capability Brown landscape of The Pastures or out on the coast and a walk along the beach to Hauxley Nature Reserve. We’ll then head back to the accommodation for a final coffee before departing for home.

Maps and Information

Below you will find maps of routes you will take on this Northumberland walk:

Holy Island , Hadrians Wall Loop, Howick to Dunstanburgh and Simonside Loop.

We have tried to put together a variety of walks to give you a look at different regions of Northumberland, from flat coastal walks, to open moorland with some steep rocky climbs and barren landscapes. None of the walks require any technical expertise, however you do need to be physically prepared for some climbing and uneven ground.

Terrain

The terrain of all our routes can be very varied, below is a general guide to what you can expect, and not expect, on these walks:

  • Minor Roads (Tarmac / Asphalt)
  • Paved Footpaths
  • Way-marked public footpaths / bridleways
  • Grassy unpaved open fields
  • Areas of mud / standing water
  • Sandy Beaches
  • Tidal Water
  • Rocky uneven ascents / decents
  • Requirement for “Scrambling”
  • Streams / Water Crossing (wider than 1m)
  • Risk of Slipping

Some of the steeper climbs around Steel Rigg/Housesteads (Hadrians Wall Walk) can be bypassed by following the alternative route (Pennine Way).

There is a reasonably steep downhill descent from the top of Simonside, which is quite rocky (alternative route available)
