Route Highlights of the Border Abbeys

Kelso Abbey

Situated on the edge of Kelso, this abbey showcases some of the most beautiful Scottish medieval architecture. Founded by monks invited by King David I, it was once one of the largest and wealthiest religious houses in Scotland.

Jedburgh

The historic royal burgh of Jedburgh is a beautiful town north of the English Border. Take in a riverside walk, browse the shops, grab a bite to eat or track down the 16th century Ferniehirst Castle. There is something for everyone.

Melrose Abbey

Arguably the most famous ruin in Scotland, this abbey boasts beautiful, decorated masonry. The surviving remains are early 15th century and many objects found in the excavation can be viewed in the Commendator’s House. Packed with history, this abbey is even thought to be the burial place of Robert the Bruce’s heart.

Dryburgh Abbey

First established in 1150, Dryburgh Abbey became the premier house in Scotland of the Premonstratensian order. Situated in an isolated woodland by the River Tweed, these tranquil ruins are unmistakable.
